That is the assessment of the Tourism Subcommittee of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee of Thailand, according to the Bangkok Post. Ms. Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, Chairwoman of the Subcommittee, pointed out that Thailand needs new investment in tourism, especially artificial development projects, otherwise it will lose its competitiveness.
Last year, Vietnam announced a $67 billion high-speed railway project connecting the capital Hanoi in the north with Ho Chi Minh City in the south, scheduled to be operational by 2035.
Speaking at the SPLASH Forum - Soft Power 2025 held last week, Ms. Marisa said this development would benefit tourism, as Vietnam is a country with a beautiful long coastline, which can attract more hotel development projects.

Vietnam has welcomed leading luxury hotel brands such as Capella Hanoi, designed by architect Bill Bensley. Vietnam is also planning to build a new Hanoi Opera House, which is set to become the capital’s newest icon.
Mr. Kriengkrai Kanjanapokin, a member of the Festival Subcommittee of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee of Thailand, said that the investor of Ba Na Hills in Da Nang shared with him that the inauguration of the famous Golden Bridge would help attract tourists to stay longer and participate in more activities at Ba Na Hills.
Da Nang has finally become a top tourist city thanks to these activities, he noted. "Because Thailand has so many temples, many beautifully built temples, we should tell a new story about the tourism experience, whether it is focusing on religious tourism, architectural tourism or spiritual health tourism," Mr. Kriengkrai said.
Ms. Marisa agreed and further emphasized that at a time when other sectors are being hampered by new US reciprocal tariffs, tourism development should be considered a key performance indicator of all ministries and public institutions to allow for closer cooperation between them.
Other opportunities for Thailand include rail tourism, connecting tourists to second-tier cities, as countries like Spain and France, each attracting around 100 million visitors a year, have good rail connections. The State Railway of Thailand is planning to introduce new air-conditioned trains to meet the needs of tourists. In addition, traditional festivals need to be redesigned to serve more than just traditions to encourage tourists to stay longer…
