Vietnamese tennis wins Davis Cup match at midnight

The duo Van Phuong and Tuan Minh brought the first victory for the Vietnamese tennis team against Saudi Arabia in the doubles match of Group A of the Davis Cup Group III 2025 in Bac Ninh.

At nearly midnight on July 17, Nguyen Van Phuong and Dinh Viet Tuan Minh came back from behind to defeat the Bukhari - Idrees pair of Saudi Arabia with a score of 1-2 (7-6, 5-7, 6-7) after 2 hours and 56 minutes of play.

The central court of Hanaka Paris Ocean Park ( Bac Ninh ) still has nearly 100 spectators cheering for the Vietnamese tennis team. On the online platform, there are about 500 views at the same time.

The doubles match was a tight affair and ended in a tie-break. Tuan Minh, with his direct serves, contributed greatly to the victory with his senior Van Phuong.

This victory only had spiritual significance as in the end, the Vietnamese tennis team still lost 1-2 to Saudi Arabia. In the two previous singles matches, Pham La Hoang Anh and Vu Ha Minh Duc both lost.

Pham La Hoang Anh lost to Saud Alhogbani quickly 6-4 and 6-1. Vu Ha Minh Duc won the first set against Ammar Alhogbani but lost with the final score 7-6, 3-6 and 1-6.

Coach of the Vietnamese tennis team, Mr. Nguyen Phi Anh Vu, commented: "In the first two singles matches, Hoang Anh and Minh Duc tried very hard and played their best. Hoang Anh, in his first participation, faced a lot of pressure but always showed his efforts, while Minh Duc's winning 1 set is progress."

The victory in the doubles match between Van Phuong and Tuan Minh has great significance for the match against the Singapore tennis team tomorrow. If there is a good result, Vietnamese tennis will successfully stay in Group III.

Athlete Tuan Minh shared: "I thank the audience for staying to cheer for the team until midnight. It's been a long time since I played a doubles match that lasted 3 sets. This victory is a morale boost for the whole team tomorrow."

Vietnam tennis team is in group A with Thailand (seed number 1), Saudi Arabia (seed number 3) and Singapore (seed number 7). In the opening match on July 14, Vietnam tennis lost 0-3 to Thailand.
