Matej Kovar continues to be absent from Ten Hag's plans. |
After being sacked by MU last October due to a series of poor starts, Ten Hag took a long time to find a new destination. Finally, the Dutch strategist sat in the hot seat at Bayer Leverkusen, replacing Xabi Alonso.
However, the club said goodbye to a series of pillars such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Jonathan Tah. To rebuild, Leverkusen quickly brought in Jarell Quansah from Liverpool and Mark Flekken from Brentford. German media confirmed that the appearance of goalkeeper Flekken forced Matej Kovar to leave.
Interestingly, Kovar was sold by Ten Hag himself from MU in the summer of 2023. He joined Leverkusen from MU for £7.7 million, after many years of not having the opportunity to play in the first team and having to wander on loan contracts at Swindon Town, Burton Albion or Sparta Prague.
However, after just 32 starts and two seasons with Leverkusen, the Czech goalkeeper is set to move to PSV Eindhoven for around £3.5m. At the Eredivisie champions, Kovar hopes to secure a starting spot to further his career rather than remain a back-up option.
Leverkusen under Ten Hag will play a friendly against Flamengo U20 on July 18, then face Bochum, Fortuna Sittard, Pisa and Chelsea. Ten Hag's first official match will be the opening match against SG in the National Cup, before facing Hoffenheim in the opening round of the 2025/26 Bundesliga.
