New US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had his first phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 24, according to AFP.


In a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 24, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the US's commitment to its allies in the region and its serious concerns about "China's coercive actions against Taiwan and the East Sea," AFP quoted US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce as saying.

Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post quoted a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying that in the above phone call, Mr. Rubio affirmed that Washington does not support Taiwan independence, according to the South China Morning Post .

"The United States does not support Taiwan independence and hopes that the Taiwan issue will be resolved peacefully in a way acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait," Rubio said in a phone call with Wang, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

Mr. Rubio also told Mr. Wang that the Trump administration will pursue a US-China relationship that advances American interests and puts the American people first.

Regarding the exchange with Mr. Rubio on January 24, Mr. Vuong is said to have stated: "We have no intention of surpassing or replacing anyone, but we must protect our legitimate development rights."

Mr. Wang also urged Mr. Rubio to “play a constructive role for the future of the Chinese and American people and for world peace and stability,” according to the South China Morning Post, citing a statement from Beijing.
