Today, October 7, VinUni University held the opening ceremony of the 2023-2024 academic year. This is an academic year with many important milestones for VinUni, including three notable events: a new principal professor from the US, the first batch of university graduates, and official candidacy to become a University Chair of Vietnam in the UNESCO University Chairs network worldwide (in the field of environment and sustainable development).
On the opening day, the new principal, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg, officially appeared before the whole school, gave a speech and beat the drum to open the school year.

Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg has been in Vietnam to take up his new position for a month now, as acting principal. But since the opening day of the new school year, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg has officially appeared before the whole school as the new principal of the school, concurrently Director of VinUni Institute of Health Sciences .
The former president and first president of VinUni University is Professor Rohit Verma, who was previously the Dean of External Affairs at Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University (USA).
Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg is a famous American scientist in the field of health sciences. Before coming to Vietnam to become the President of VinUni University, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg was the founding President of the School of Public Health , Oregon Health Sciences University and Portland University (USA). In science, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg has made great contributions to global medicine, especially in the fields of HIV/AIDS prevention, control and treatment, internal medicine, immunology, and health inequalities among the urban poor. He has successfully raised more than 70 million USD for research. In 2007, he was honored by Science Magazine as the second most funded HIV/AIDS researcher globally by the US National Institutes of Health.
As founding dean of the School of Public Health at Oregon Health Sciences University and Portland State University, he spearheaded the creation of the president’s scholarship fund to provide tuition assistance to talented students. To date, the fund has awarded more than half a million dollars in tuition assistance to students.
During the opening ceremony, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg shared: "I will accompany and support lecturers, students and staff in facing the most important challenges. I hope to be able to take advantage of my international network, with trusted, talented and valuable colleagues to cooperate with VinUniversity. and VinUni Institute of Health Sciences, together reaching new heights, creating sustainable differences both in Vietnam and internationally."

According to Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VinUni University, Professor - Doctor David Bangsberg is a person who possesses the dedication and empathy of a doctor; the connecting ability of a great leader; and the precision and intelligence of an excellent scientist.
