Warmth to the sick
At just over 6 o'clock, the kitchen of the charity kitchen at Khanh Hoa General Hospital was already red hot. Volunteers were busy washing vegetables and cooking. Each pot of rice, soup, and meat was cooked one by one. In the outer room, volunteers divided the food into boxes, and by 10 o'clock the work was completed, and the boxes of charity lunches were delivered to patients and their families. In addition to giving rice, the program also gave the patients 20,000 VND/person.

Coming to receive rice from the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nam (70 years old, Cam Ranh ward) shared that she has been raising her child with kidney disease at the hospital for 8 months. Being a poor household, she receives rice from the hospital's charity kitchen every day. This time, she was informed to receive rice cooked by some benefactors, and was also given an additional 20,000 VND, so she was very happy. Receiving rice instead of his wife who is being treated at the Department of Internal Medicine and Neurology, Mr. Tran Van Than (Nam Ninh Hoa commune) was moved: "Being in the hospital for a long time, the cost of medicine is already a burden, and eating and drinking often has to be frugal. Today, receiving a portion of rice from the benefactors, I feel like my worries are shared. Eating a piece of rice makes me feel warm, because there is love in it. This is a very meaningful program." Carrying her 9-month-old child to the charity kitchen to receive a portion of rice from the hands of the donors, Ms. Cao Thi Lanh (Khanh Vinh commune) said: “My child has epilepsy and was admitted to the hospital for treatment yesterday. The family’s financial situation is difficult, I am worried that if he has to be treated for a long time, I will not know where to get money to cover the food expenses. Today, the hospital gave me a voucher to receive rice from the charity kitchen, a full portion of rice with meat, vegetables, soup, and banana for dessert, it is more delicious than rice cooked at home.”
Not only for patients, but also for the medical staff, these meals are a great source of encouragement. In the middle of a stressful shift, having a meaningful meal from the community helps them feel warmer and reduces the hardships of work.
Spread humanity
According to Dr. Nguyen Luong Ky - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa General Hospital, the hospital's charity kitchen has been operating for more than 20 years. On average, each day, the kitchen coordinates with the hospital's Social Work Department to serve about 400 meals to about 200 patients from poor households, households in difficult circumstances, and ethnic minorities. The operating budget of the charity kitchen comes from voluntary contributions from agencies, units, and benefactors inside and outside the province.

In this program, the donors both contribute funds and directly participate in cooking, so compared to regular meals, the meals of the program are more nutritious. “Treating patients every day, we clearly see the difficulties of many families. Because in addition to treatment costs, they also worry about daily food expenses, especially for families living far away. Therefore, meals like today not only help patients get enough nutrition, but more importantly, they feel the care of the community. It is a priceless spiritual medicine, giving patients more strength to overcome difficulties. We hope the program will spread throughout the community. The hospital will continue to be a bridge for individuals and organizations to join hands to bring this humanitarian activity to patients.”
As one of the sponsors participating in the program, Mr. Cao Van Luan - owner of Pho Hoa Hoi Vang restaurant (Australia) said: "Last year, I coordinated with a number of units to implement the program of cooking 3,000 bowls of pho to give to patients at Khanh Hoa General Hospital. This time, we are cooking rice and hope that these meals will help reduce the difficulties and anxiety of the patients". As for Ms. Chau Tieu Ngoc - representative of Com Tam Tieu Chau Sai Gon shared: "Working in the culinary industry, we understand how important meals are to health. Therefore, the ingredients we use to cook today's meals are all fresh food. A meal can only fill a patient for a few hours, but the love that comes in each lunch box can warm their hearts for many days. This is the reason we came to the program".
Not only stopping at 1,000 meals, the program also donated 2 tons of rice and 1,000 liters of fish sauce to the hospital's charity kitchen. This is a practical source of support, helping to maintain free meals for poor patients for a longer period of time.
The program of giving 1,000 meals of love to patients in difficult circumstances and medical staff of Khanh Hoa General Hospital and benefactors once again affirmed that taking care of people's health is not only about medical skills, but also about meals filled with humanity.
The total value of the program is over 100 million VND, from the joint contributions of the sponsors: Com Tam Tieu Chau Saigon (branch in Khanh Hoa); Tui Blue Nha Trang Hotel; Mr Pho Hoa Hoi Vang (Australia) and Ms. Tran Thi Y Nhi (Khanh Hoa province).
