Solskjaer saves former MU defender's career after prison sentence

After nearly 18 months away from top-flight football, Brandon Williams is rumoured to be preparing to return to the pitch for Besiktas.

Brandon Williams is likely to play for Besiktas.

The Daily Mail revealed that Williams is in talks to join Besiktas, the team currently led by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former MU captain is the one who gave Williams many opportunities to play when he was at Old Trafford.

Besiktas have been active in the transfer market this summer, signing Joao Mario from Benfica and Tammy Abraham from AC Milan. After parting ways with Arthur Masuaku, Solskjaer is keen to add a versatile full-back. Williams, who can play both left and right, is seen as a suitable option given the tight budget.

The biggest question now is, after nearly two years without playing at the highest level, will Williams still have enough physical strength, form and spirit to start again? If he joins Besiktas, he will not only face the challenge of competing in a new environment, but also carry the hope of closing the noisy past to restart a football career that seemed to have slipped away.

The 24-year-old full-back officially left Old Trafford last summer, ending his time with the "Red Devils" since 2008. Before that, Williams had been on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship, but an injury in December forced him to return to Manchester for treatment and has since disappeared from professional football for the entire season.

Notably, Williams has also been in serious legal trouble during his time off the court. In May, he was sentenced to a 14-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving. The court heard that Williams was driving at 100 mph, colliding with a Ford Fiesta and then crashing into a median in Wilmslow while carrying a female passenger.

Fortunately, those involved suffered only minor injuries. Williams was also hospitalized and faces a number of mental and neurological health issues. In court, his defense attorney said Williams was truly remorseful and was in a more stable condition both physically and mentally.

The player himself admitted his mistake: "I do not make excuses for my actions. I have learned a big lesson and will never let something like this happen again."
