Slovakia is looking to build a new 1,200 MW nuclear power plant at the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear plant, Reuters reported. The economy and finance ministries are expected to submit the plan to the government by the end of October.

In July, Slovakia's neighbor the Czech Republic chose South Korean hydroelectric and nuclear power company KHNP over France's EDF to build new nuclear power units.

Prime Minister Robert Fico said that South Korea could be a potential partner in the Slovakian project. "South Korea is a country with which we have good political relations and is an important investor in Slovakia," Fico said at a press conference on September 27.

In addition, the government will also discuss with American and French contractors.

According to the Slovak Government Office, Prime Minister Robert Fico will meet with President Yoon Suk Yeol during his three-day visit to South Korea, discussing bilateral relations as well as cooperation on regional and global issues.

Yonhap reported that President Yoon Suk Yeol met with Zuzana Caputova, the predecessor of current President Peter Pellegrini, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Lithuania in July 2023.

Slovenske Elektrarne is Slovakia's largest electricity provider. Last year, Slovenske Elektrarne completed the 472 MW unit 3 at the Mochovce nuclear power plant and is currently completing another unit at the same site. The company also operates two 505 MW units at the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant.
