The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported on May 27 that super typhoon Mawar has entered the Philippines' area of responsibility, after causing damage on the Pacific island of Guam.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said that at 2 a.m. on May 27 (local time), super typhoon Mawar entered the Philippines' area of responsibility and was named Betty.

AccuWeather reported that the storm, which swept across Guam with high winds and flooding rains, is continuing to move west and is expected to affect many land areas in the western Pacific and East Asia next week.

Although already the strongest tropical storm on the planet this year, Mawar could strengthen further and then sweep across parts of the Philippines, Japan and Taiwan, starting on May 27, with forecasts of flooding and high winds.

As of the evening of May 26, the storm had sustained winds of up to 252 km/h. "Mawar is forecast to maintain its strength, or even strengthen slightly, as it continues to move westward across the Philippine Sea over the weekend," said Jason Nicholls, AccuWeather's chief international forecaster.

Super Typhoon Mawar is forecast to maintain or reduce its wind speed after reaching 252 km/h and affecting the mainland.

"The storm is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to northern Luzon island of the Philippines from late May 27 to May 30," said Mr. Nicholls.

According to CNN, the Philippines has suspended sea travel and warned small boats of the approaching storm. Super Typhoon Mawar is forecast to head towards Japan and Taiwan after affecting the Philippines.

Typhoon Mawar causes damage on Guam Island

When it swept across Guam Island on May 24, super typhoon Mawar, with winds of up to 225 km/h, knocked down trees, tore off roofs, and brought heavy rain.

The super typhoon caused widespread power outages, but there were no reports of human casualties. US President Joe Biden on May 25 approved a disaster declaration for the island, helping to spend federal budget for recovery.
