Samsung develops new low-power DRAM

According to Extremetech , Samsung proposes using the new DRAM primarily in large language model (LLM)-based artificial intelligence systems, although the memory is also suitable for other workloads.

Will LLW DRAM memory technology be heading to smartphones, laptops or self-driving cars?

In terms of specifications, LLW DRAM is a low-power memory with high I/O capabilities, low latency, and a bandwidth of 128 GB/s per module. This is comparable to the combination of DDR5-8000 memory and a 128-bit bus. One of the key features of LLW DRAM is its low power consumption of 1.2 pJ/bit, although the company did not disclose at what data transfer rate this value was measured.

Samsung has not yet disclosed specific technical details about LLW DRAM, but since the company has been developing wide-interface memories like GDDR6W for a while, it is possible that Samsung will combine the capacity of several of these DRAM modules into a single package using FOWLP (Fan-Out Wafer-Level Packaging) technology to increase interface bandwidth and reduce power consumption.

Samsung has standardized GDDR6W memory in Q2 2022 and plans to use it in AI systems or high-performance computing (HPC) systems, so it is likely that LLW DRAM will be used in edge computing devices for AI systems such as smartphones, laptops, and even self-driving car systems.

Samsung rarely discloses when its promising technologies will hit the market, so it’s unclear when LLW DRAM will be available in real devices. However, since Samsung has released details about the technology’s expected performance, development of LLW DRAM may be nearly complete.
