Alonso's Real Madrid
The transformation continues to improve and is comprehensive. Real Madrid once again showed a big step forward in the transformation process when competing in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 .

In the quarter-finals, Real Madrid completely dominated Borussia Dortmund in regular time.
“Los Blancos” had an excellent start and almost finished off their opponents in just the first 20 minutes with goals from Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia.
Luis Enrique's side are through to the semi-finals, where they will face Luis Enrique's PSG – the most recent Champions League winners.
In his first press conference at Valdebebas, Xabi Alonso said he wanted his team to make the fans “feel proud” .
“We want to convey emotions, joy, so that people say 'this is the team I love, this is my Real Madrid' ,” Alonso stressed.
In the first half at MetLife Stadium, Real Madrid did just that: emotional, full of joy and unstoppable.
Real Madrid played their best minutes of the tournament – a trend that has continued and improved with each game, each training session – and controlled the game in a way they have not done for a long time.
In New Jersey, there were two prominent names: the Garcias: Gonzalo and Fran – the authors of the two goals that confirmed Madrid's superiority.

This comes from Xabi Alonso’s next tactical change. The Spanish coach, after using a three-man defence in the last two games, has brought Tchouameni back into the role of holding the key man for Dortmund, Brandt.
In defense, Trent was pushed into the third center-back role, while Valverde guarded the right wing to mark the speedy Adeyemi.
This tactic left Dortmund completely deadlocked, unable to find space to attack and confused in defense.
However, Arda Guler was the spark in the game, when he constantly pressed with Tchouameni and Bellingham, alongside the high attacks of Fran and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Explode and tremble
The opening goal came from Guler's assist for Gonzalo to tap the ball in close to the goal in the 10th minute. The Turkish player is showing composure, the ability to observe and make final passes.
Real Madrid maintained the intensity of their pressing and the precision of their combinations, constantly switching positions in midfield, moving intelligently without the ball, exploiting the space behind Dortmund's defense .

In the 20th minute, Real Madrid attacked the right wing with rondo-like passes, patiently waiting for the right opportunity. Gonzalo opened the ball, Trent entered the penalty area and crossed low for Fran Garcia to rush in and finish.
Dortmund collapsed. Bellingham had a chance to make it 3-0 but his shot missed. Vinicius also had a chance from Guler's through ball and chipped the ball over the bar.
After the break, Madrid took the initiative to slow down, seemingly thinking about bigger goals, so Dortmund gradually had more possession of the ball, but did not create any danger for Courtois.
The match was largely played in midfield, with Madrid keeping tight control and only conceding Dortmund's first shot on target in the 61st minute.
Alonso started making adjustments with PSG in mind: Bellingham and Vinicius, bringing on Mbappe and Modric.
When everything seemed settled, Rudiger made a mistake in a clearance, allowing Beier to score to shorten the score to 1-2 in the 92nd minute.

The match turned into pure chaos. Mbappe made it 3-1 with an acrobatic finish, then Huijsen pulled Guirassy down in the box – leading to a penalty and a straight red card.
Guirassy scored from the penalty spot, making it a goal. In the final stages, Dortmund almost equalized with Sabitzer's finish to take the game into extra time - at which point the advantage belonged to them.
That's when Courtois shined. The Belgian goalkeeper made a spectacular save and secured the victory for Real Madrid.
“Maybe what happened in the last minute was good for us,” Alonso said, considering it a lesson ahead of the match against PSG – who are also without Lucas Hernandez and Willian Pacho due to red cards in the Bayern Munich match.
