After merging with the Departments of Education and Training of Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, the new Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City was officially established and began operating on the largest scale in the country with nearly 3,500 schools and about 2.6 million students at all levels.

Previously, on the afternoon of July 1, the 10th term of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, 2021-2026 term, held its first session after merging 3 localities: Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau. At the session, the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council appointed 16 members of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, including 14 directors of 14 departments and branches after the merger.

The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City was established on the basis of merging the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Education and Training of Binh Duong province and the Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. After the merger, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has the largest scale in the country in terms of schools, teachers and students.

Specifically, according to published data for the 2024-2025 school year, before the merger, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training had more than 1.7 million students, and Binh Duong province had about 520,700 students. Meanwhile, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province had about 300,000 students. Thus, after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has about 2.6 million students, the most in the country.

After the merger, the Ho Chi Minh City Education and Training sector has the largest scale in the country in terms of schools, teachers and students.

Regarding the scale of schools, before the merger, Ho Chi Minh City had 2,341 schools, including 1,308 kindergartens, 529 primary schools, 299 secondary schools, and 205 high schools. Binh Duong province had 713 schools at all levels, including 375 public schools and 338 non-public schools. Ba Ria - Vung Tau province had 463 schools, including 195 kindergartens, 139 primary schools, 91 secondary schools, and 38 high schools. Thus, after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has a scale of about 3,500 schools from kindergarten to high school.

Regarding the teaching staff: According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the education and training sector of Ho Chi Minh City (old) has 80,612 teachers. Of which, there are 26,889 preschool teachers, 23,155 primary school teachers, 18,125 secondary school teachers and 12,442 high school teachers. Binh Duong province has about 16,000 teachers, of which 1,048 are managers. Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has about more than 16,000 teachers at all levels. After the merger, the scale of the education and training sector of Ho Chi Minh City currently has more than 110,000 teachers.

The new Board of Directors of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City consists of 1 director and 9 deputy directors. Specifically: Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu is the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu was appointed as Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City after the merger.

The deputy directors include Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Le Thuy My Chau, Huynh Le Nhu Trang, Duong Tri Dung, Huynh Thi Nhat Hang, Nguyen Van Phong, Truong Hai Thanh, Tran Thi Ngoc Chau, Nguyen Ke Toai.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has its headquarters at 66-68 Le Thanh Ton, Saigon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City. The departments/offices of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training include: Office, Inspection - Legal Affairs Department (reorganized by the Inspectorate according to regulations and supplemented with legal functions and tasks), Personnel Organization Department, Planning - Finance Department, Student Department (renamed from Political and Ideological Department), Quality Management Department (renamed from Examination and Education Quality Assessment Department), Preschool Education Department, General Education Department, Continuing Education - Vocational and University Education Department, Non-public Educational Institution Management Department.

Public service units include 198 units: 165 general schools (junior high schools - high schools; high schools); 2 specialized high schools; 2 general schools for gifted students in physical education and sports; 1 special general school; 2 schools for children with disabilities; 3 affiliated kindergartens including: Thanh Pho Kindergarten, 19.5, Nam Sai Gon; 6 intermediate schools; 10 continuing education centers; 1 continuing education center - Vocational training; 3 centers to support the development of inclusive education for people with disabilities; 1 center for comprehensive technical education and career guidance; 1 center for foreign languages, information technology; 1 center for information and educational programs.
