On May 28, Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq al-Said arrived in Tehran, starting a two-day visit to Iran with a planned focus on issues such as diplomatic relations and regional security.

Oman has long acted as a bridge between Iran and the West. Muscat has brokered prisoner swaps between Tehran and several countries, most recently a deal between Belgium and Iran to release individuals held by both sides that was announced on May 26.

Oman was also an intermediary country between Iran and the US in the process of building the Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015.

King Haitham is scheduled to meet Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to discuss issues such as Tehran's relations with Egypt and Iran's nuclear program .

Ahead of the visit, Asharq al-Awsat newspaper quoted Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi as saying the visit was aimed at seeking constructive coordination and consultation on various regional and international issues.

Oman is optimistic that Sultan Haitham's "historic" visit to Iran will bring benefits both regionally and internationally, Foreign Minister Busaidi said.

In 2022, Oman and Iran signed agreements to build two gas pipelines and exploit an oil field in the maritime border area between the two countries.

Oman's ONA news agency said the agreements relate to the implementation of two projects to build a gas pipeline between the two countries and exploit the Hengam oil field.

Oman has close economic and political relations with Iran and played an intermediary role between Tehran and Washington during the negotiations of the nuclear deal signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 powers (including the US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany)./.
