Today's world military (July 4) has the following content: Germany successfully test-fired a naval attack missile from the MARS 3 missile launcher; Poland launched the radio-electronic reconnaissance ship Jerzy Rozycki; India developed the K-6 ballistic missile.

* Germany successfully test-fired a naval attack missile from the MARS 3 missile launcher

Germany has just successfully test-fired a naval strike missile (NSM) from the MARS 3 missile launcher. The NSM missile, supplied by Kongsberg Group (Norway), has a total weight of 407kg and carries a 125kg warhead.

MARS 3 is the European configuration of the Precision Universal Launch System (PULS) designed and developed by Elbit Systems (Israel). In February, Germany signed a 55 million euro contract to purchase five of these launchers.

MARS 3 is integrated into the Iveco Trakker 8x8 chassis but can also be mounted on Scania 8x8, Tatra 6x6 and BAE tracked vehicles. The launcher weighs less than 40 tons, has an effective range of 300km depending on the ammunition, and is capable of firing 12 missiles per minute.

The MARS 3 launcher has an open modular structure, capable of launching a variety of missiles and rockets, including the 122mm Accular (35km), 160mm Accular (40km), EXTRA (150km), Predator Hawk (300km), SkyStriker drone, AT2 anti-tank mine (150km) and NSM (over 250km). In the future, it can be integrated with the Joint Fire Support Missile (JFSM), with a range of up to 499km.

The naval strike missile is designed for anti-ship and land attack purposes. The missile has an INS inertial guidance system with GPS, TERCOM, laser altimeter and an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, allowing automatic target detection and discrimination. The missile reaches a speed of Mach 0.93 (about 1,149 km/h), with a standard range of more than 185 km, while the Block 1A variant ordered by Germany has a range of more than 300 km. The missile can be launched from naval ships, land launchers and aircraft.

The integration of the NSM missile into the MARS 3 launcher fits into Germany's efforts to modernize its deep-land strike capabilities.

* Poland launches radio-electronic reconnaissance ship Jerzy Rozycki

The Polish Navy has launched the radio-electronic reconnaissance vessel Jerzy Rozycki at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk (Poland).

According to Militarnyi, before delivery, Jerzy Rozycki will be equipped with specialized reconnaissance systems and undergo a series of sea trials. The ship is expected to be in service with the Polish Navy from 2026.

Jerzy Rozycki is one of two Project 107 radio-electronic reconnaissance ships that Poland has ordered from the Swedish Saab Group under a contract worth around 620 million euros signed in 2022. The deal includes design, construction, delivery and logistics support for two Delfin-class ships.

The purchase, according to Naval Technology, is aimed at boosting the Polish military’s maritime intelligence capabilities through advanced maritime radio-electronic systems. The new vessels will be integrated into the reconnaissance group of the 3rd Fleet and stationed at the Naval Base in Gdynia.

The Delfin class ships are based on the design of the Swedish HMS Artemis. The ship is 74m long, displaces 3,000 tons, and is powered by four diesel generators with a capacity of 990 kW/machine. The ship has a crew of about 35-40 people. The ship will be equipped with electronic intelligence (ELINT), communications intelligence (COMINT), mass intelligence (MASINT) and imaging intelligence (IMINT) systems.

* India develops K-6 ballistic missile

According to IDRW, India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is actively developing the K-6 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), with a range of 8,000 km and a hypersonic speed of Mach 7.5 (about 9,170 km/hour).

India has completed the development of the K-5 nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of 5,000 to 6,000 km, while the K-4 missile with a range of 3,500 km has been inducted into service on its Arihant-class nuclear-powered submarines. Photo: DRDO

The K-6 is designed to significantly enhance India’s strategic deterrence capabilities. The missile will be equipped on the Indian Navy’s S5-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), which have a displacement of about 13,500 tonnes and carry 12 SLBMs. The K-6 is a three-stage solid-fuel missile, 12 metres long and 2 metres wide, capable of carrying a 2-3 tonne nuclear warhead. A notable feature is the Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) capability that allows the missile to launch multiple warheads at different targets.

The development of the K6 missile comes after DRDO completed the development of the K-5 missile with a range of 5,000-6,000 km. The K-5 missile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead weighing up to 2 tonnes. The K-5 is designed to be integrated on the larger S4 and S4* submarines, which are the current Arihant-class submarines .

India has also inducted the K-4 missile, with a range of 3,500 km, on its Arihant-class submarines. These are K-series missiles developed with the aim of establishing a multi-layered nuclear strike posture. The K-series missiles include the K-15 (750-1,500 km), K-4 (3,500-4,000 km), K-5 (5,000-6,000 km) and K-6 (6,000-8,000 km).

According to Army Recognition, the presence of the K-6 missile will strengthen India's nuclear triad, which includes the land-based Agni missile, air-launched nuclear bombs and sea-based SLBMs.
