On September 26, the Sudanese army launched a major offensive against rival paramilitary forces in the capital Khartoum, marking the most significant effort in months to regain control of the city.

AFP news agency quoted witnesses as saying that fierce fighting took place in the center of the capital Khartoum and the neighboring cities of Omdurman and Bahri, with air strikes, artillery fire as well as clashes with light and medium weapons.

According to an unnamed military source, the Sudanese army attacked several areas controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the center, west and south of the capital Khartoum to push the force away from important locations.

Witnesses said there were violent explosions near the army headquarters, the General Intelligence Directorate headquarters and Khartoum international airport. However, the Sudanese military has not made any official comments on these activities.

Meanwhile, RSF adviser El Basha Tabig denied any results of the Sudanese army's offensive, claiming that the force had destroyed an army unit trying to cross the El Fitihab bridge towards Khartoum.

Videos of Sudanese army units entering the Al Souq Al-Arabi market in central Khartoum, an area identified as an RSF stronghold, have been circulating on social media.

Sudan’s civil war, which broke out on April 15 last year, has devastated Khartoum and other urban areas. Previous ceasefires have failed to halt the conflict, leading to a humanitarian crisis that has left aid agencies struggling to deliver essential supplies.

On September 26, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo said in a recorded message to the United Nations General Assembly that the force remained ready to implement a nationwide ceasefire in the fighting with the Sudanese army and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.
