Electric car battery that fully charges in just 18 seconds is coming soon

British company RML Group is preparing to mass produce VarEVolt batteries, an electric car battery that can be fully charged in just 18 seconds, promising to change the entire electric car industry.

The VarEVolt battery architecture allows it to fully discharge or charge in just 18 seconds, achieving C200 performance, a level of performance that is almost unprecedented in the lithium-ion battery industry. To put that in perspective, the high-end battery currently used in the Porsche Taycan, this expensive electric sports car, only meets C4–C5 standards, requiring 12–15 minutes to complete a charging cycle.

Mr. Michael Mallock, member of the board of directors of RML, said that each kilogram of battery can provide up to 6 kilowatts, with the ability to discharge super fast, suitable for supercars that need extremely large capacity in a short time.

Currently, VarEVolt batteries are used in a number of special car models, typically the Czinger 21C hybrid supercar combining an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, with a limited production of only 80 units. However, RML's ambitions do not stop at the supercar segment.

The company is developing battery conversion kits for older high-performance cars like the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, replacing their old energy storage systems with advanced VarEVolt batteries. “Not only does the new system extend range, it can also increase power output by eight times,” Mallock said.

If widely applied, this super-fast battery technology could eliminate the biggest barrier to electric vehicles today: long charging times. With a full battery charge in less than half a minute, the experience of using an electric car will be close to that of traditional gasoline refueling, but cleaner and more powerful.

While the cost of production currently limits its application to high-end models, RML believes that scaling up and lowering costs is only a matter of time. And when that happens, the era of “charging like refueling” may no longer be a fantasy.
