As one of the delegates attending and witnessing the ceremony announcing Phu Quy Island as a special economic zone on June 30, Mr. Ngo Hung, 64 years old this year, was moved and expected that people's lives would develop more strongly since this historical milestone.
The islanders are gentle, simple and hospitable.
Born and raised on Phu Quy Island, Mr. Hung has witnessed many changes from hardship to prosperity of the local people. He recalls the early days of the island's liberation, people's lives were extremely difficult, there was no electricity, each time going to and from the mainland was an arduous journey.
"In the past, islanders had to go to the mainland by wooden boat, which took more than a day to get there. That was when the sea was calm. When the sea was rough, even a level 6 wind would cut off communication with the mainland. Food and rice from the mainland could not reach the island, so people had to go hungry. When they were sick, they had to accept a disadvantage compared to the mainland, due to poor medical conditions and inability to travel," Mr. Hung recounted.

He continued emotionally: "Now there are many high-speed boats running, the time from the island to the mainland is only 2.5 hours. Roads and electricity grids have been invested in by the State, the lives of people on the island have improved a lot."
He enthusiastically told that the islanders have always been very gentle. Property, motorbikes... can be left anywhere on the island and never stolen. When tourists ask for directions, the islanders enthusiastically guide them.
"These are characteristics that few places have. Phu Quy people live together peacefully and help each other when facing difficulties. Hopefully, these characteristics will continue to be nurtured and not disappear in the future when the island becomes a special economic zone on July 1," Mr. Hung hopes.
Phu Quy Special Zone will develop to its full potential.
At the end of the ceremony announcing the merger of provinces and cities, establishing Phu Quy special economic zone in Lam Dong province, Mr. Le Hong Loi - Chairman of Phu Quy special economic zone People's Committee - emotionally shared with Tuoi Tre Online that he hopes the island will develop more strongly as expected by the whole country. According to Mr. Loi, Phu Quy from a small island district now becoming a special economic zone is very meaningful.

"We ourselves are very moved and happy because the island has reached a new level, when the Central and Government pay attention to turn it into a special economic zone. The special economic zone will have its own characteristics, thereby creating conditions for us to continue the tasks of building Phu Quy to develop more and more," Mr. Loi shared.
He added that Phu Quy special economic zone has two problems. First, when operating the special economic zone government, all cadres in the area will perform well in managing activities more effectively and efficiently, as well as achieving the goals expected by the Party and State.
Second, when a special zone is formed and the Government stipulates specific policies, the locality will continue to pay attention to investing in infrastructure, further developing the economy, especially tourism.

"When becoming a special economic zone, we are very pleased and promise to focus and try to propose to the province to soon implement to bring tourism on this island to international level as expected by General Secretary To Lam," Mr. Loi pledged.
He added: "This requires us to continue to recommend that the new provincial level and central ministries pay more attention to investing resources in the island. From there, the island will develop systematically, sustainably, develop more strongly, improve the lives of people in remote coastal areas and contribute to firmly protecting the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the homeland's sea and islands."
According to Resolution No. 1671 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units of Lam Dong province, from July 1, 2025, Lam Dong province will merge Dak Nong and Binh Thuan, with 124 wards, communes and Phu Quy special zone.
Phu Quy Special Zone was established on the basis of merging Long Hai, Ngu Phung and Tam Thanh communes, the administrative - political center is located in Ngu Phung commune, with a natural area of 18.02 km2 and a population of 32,268 people.
The island is about 56 nautical miles southeast of Phan Thiet City. Phu Quy Island not only has great potential for socio-economic development but is also an important strategic area in the East Sea.
