Melania Trump has spoken out strongly in support of abortion rights in her upcoming memoir, taking a completely opposite stance from her husband, former US President Donald Trump, on a controversial issue in the country.

According to AFP quoting the book's content, Mrs. Trump wrote "it is necessary to ensure that women have the autonomy to decide their own preferences for having children, based on their own beliefs, without any interference or pressure from the government ".

The former first lady's views differ from those of Mr Trump, who has often said that his pick for the Supreme Court has paved the way for ending abortion rights nationwide.

Since the court's 2022 ruling, at least 20 states in the US have introduced full or partial restrictions, including Georgia, which bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Abortion is a major issue for voters in the tight presidential race, and Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign was quick to speak out following the news of Mrs. Trump's memoir.

"Sadly for women across America, Mrs. Trump's husband firmly disagrees with her and is the reason more than 1 in 3 American women are living under Mr. Trump's abortion ban, which threatens their health, their freedom, and their lives," said Sarafina Chitika, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Harris' campaign.

"Mr. Trump has been very clear. If he wins in November, he will ban abortion nationwide, punish women and restrict women's access to reproductive health care," said Ms. Chitika.

According to The Guardian , Mrs Trump wrote that "restricting a woman's right to choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to denying her the right to control her own body".

Mrs Trump, who has made rare campaign appearances as Mr Trump seeks to return to the White House, also posted a clip on social media.

"Individual liberty is a fundamental principle that I defend. There is absolutely no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women have from birth," she said in the video.

In the Republican Party, former first ladies Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush also supported abortion rights. Mr. Trump has not commented on his wife's views in his memoir.
