This year, the aforementioned category of the 2025 Oscars attracted more than 85 countries to submit works for competition. As expected, famous films such as Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard (representing France), The Girl With the Needle by director Magnus von Horn (representing Denmark) and The Seed of the Sacred Fig by Mohammad Rasoulof (representing Germany) have advanced to the next round.
Several highly-rated films from international film festivals are also named. These include I'm Still Here, representing Brazil, which previously won Best Screenplay at Cannes. Kneecap, a daring comedy from Ireland that stunned the Sundance Film Festival, is also on the list after sweeping the British Independent Film Awards. In addition, the Czech horror film Waves is also named after winning the Audience Choice category at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
Other works that made the shortlist include Universal Language (Canada), Touch (Iceland), Vermiglio (Italy), Flow (Latvia), Armand (Norway), From Ground Zero (Palestine), Dahomey (Senegal) and Santosh (United Kingdom).

Most notably, the Thai film Gia Van Cua Ngoai also made it onto this list. This is considered a big surprise because although it was not released at major international film festivals, it became a "word of mouth" phenomenon across Asia and earned more than 50 million USD at the global box office.
With this list, many critics say the Academy's efforts to increase geographic diversity this year are almost completely weak, as "European film powerhouses" continue to dominate with 11 of the 15 films. While Asia has 2 representatives, Africa and the Americas sadly share 1 nomination each.
Documentaries and animations continue to be underrepresented this year, with only one representative in each category. Meanwhile, films produced in Europe but shot on other continents are outnumbered.
For example, although representing France, Emilia Pérez was filmed in Mexico and is in Spanish, The Seed of the Sacred Fig represents Germany but is set in Tehran, and Santosh, directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, was also filmed in India.
The representative from Vietnam is Dao, Pho and Piano by director Phi Tien Son had to stop.
Voting for the 97th Academy Awards will begin on January 8 and run through January 12, 2025. The final shortlists will be announced on January 17, 2025.
