Spinal surgery no longer worries about "touching" nerves

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí18/03/2025

(Dan Tri) - Spinal surgery patients often worry about the risk of paralysis and nerve damage. A new technique of removing discs and grafting interbody bone at the oblique lateral line is less invasive and helps reduce this risk.

On March 18, at the training course on minimally invasive discectomy and interbody bone grafting, Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of Spinal Surgery Department, Viet Duc Hospital, said that this method has a small incision but solves many complex problems, is minimally invasive, and helps patients recover quickly.

"The hospital stay is very short, after just one day the patient can stand up, after 3-4 days the patient can be discharged and walk normally after 3-4 weeks," Associate Professor Son emphasized.

On the same afternoon, a demonstration surgery was performed by Associate Professor Son and his colleagues and shown to the doctors participating in the training course.

The patient is a woman over 40 years old, suffering from spondylolisthesis, suffering from persistent pain for many years. The patient has been treated with internal medicine, oriental medicine... but the condition has not improved.

The patient underwent minimally invasive lateral approach to treat spondylolisthesis.

"This is a safe surgical technique, different from the traditional approach (from behind to the spine), which is oblique to the side so it does not touch the nerves, only lifts the muscles so it is safer, reduces complications, reduces the risk of bleeding, reduces the risk of infection," Associate Professor Son informed.

From 2022, Viet Duc Hospital will deploy minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques, helping patients recover quickly and reducing the risk of neurological complications. This is an advanced method, applied in many countries around the world .

This is a specialized surgery that requires experienced and well-trained doctors. The first cases are often supported by vascular and urology specialists to ensure safety.

Associate Professor Son said that with the desire to have more and more patients access to advanced and safe treatment methods, Viet Duc Hospital continuously organizes training courses to transfer techniques to doctors.

During the training, doctors discussed patient selection criteria, practiced on models, and observed demonstration surgeries from experts.
