Hysterectomy, cancer treatment without an incision

(Dan Tri) - Doctors at K Hospital performed two laparoscopic surgeries to remove the uterus and remove all pelvic lymph nodes. Notably, the patient did not have to have an abdominal incision, had no external scars, and recovered quickly thanks to the vaginal intervention.

On June 27, K Hospital successfully organized a scientific seminar on "Minimally invasive surgery through natural cavities - New progress in the treatment of gynecological cancer", chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh - Deputy Director of K Hospital and Dr. Le Tri Chinh - Head of Department of Gynecological Surgery.

This is a large-scale scientific event, gathering more than 150 delegates who are leading experts in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, oncology from all over the country, from central and leading hospitals such as the Central Obstetrics Hospital, Hung Vuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital and many large medical facilities.

On the same morning, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh and Dr. Le Tri Chinh successfully performed two transvaginal endoscopic surgeries (vNOTES) to treat cancer and gynecological diseases in women.

The first patient was a 62-year-old female patient with menorrhagia and multiple uterine fibroids. The second case was a 64-year-old female patient with early-stage endometrial cancer.

The surgical team performed a total hysterectomy and a complete transvaginal pelvic lymph node dissection. Both patients were successfully treated without any abdominal incisions, no external scars, quick recovery time and minimal post-operative complications, thanks to the transvaginal endoscopic intervention.

Dr. Le Tri Chinh said that in the past, cases like the above could be treated with open surgery, laparoscopic surgery through the abdomen, robotic surgery, or vaginal surgery without the support of endoscopy.

The new vNOTES technique has been deployed at K Hospital since the end of April. Up to now, nearly 30 patients have been operated on, from benign tumors to gynecological cancers.

"Patients after surgery have no scars, the postoperative pain score is very low. Recovery time is fast, bowel circulation time is fast, patients can sit up and recover within the day. Patients who have surgery using vNOTES technique recover quickly, are discharged early, and have low treatment costs. Infection complications are greatly reduced," Dr. Chinh informed.

"This is a minimally invasive surgery, minimizing damage to healthy tissue, the abdominal wall and other organs, but still thoroughly removing cancerous lesions and dissecting abdominal lymph nodes," Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh informed.

According to Associate Professor Binh, surgery through the body's natural cavities has the advantage that the patient recovers quickly, there are no incisions, no drainage, no need for complicated pain relief, all tests are negative and especially the patient is discharged after 48 hours, with absolutely no scars, ensuring the aesthetic factor for women.

Dr. Chinh added that in the world , the first reports on vNOTES technique were in 2012, treating benign diseases and early stage cancers.

Up to now, this surgical method is still the priority in treating gynecological diseases and early-stage gynecological cancers, especially cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer.

According to Dr. Chinh, gynecological cancers are being detected earlier and earlier. Early screening helps detect the disease early, increasing the cure rate.

With gynecological cancer, the early stages often have no symptoms. Only when the disease progresses to the late stages will there be symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, urinary and bowel disorders, lower abdominal pain, etc.

Therefore, early screening is very important. Women should have regular health check-ups and screening for breast cancer, gynecological cancer, etc. as recommended to detect and treat the disease early if any.
