The discovery, announced by the French National Blood Service (EFS), marks the 48th blood group system ever recorded globally.
According to EFS, a French woman from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe has been identified as the only person carrying the new blood type, dubbed "Gwada negative".
"The patient is the only known person in the world with this blood type and is also the only person compatible with him for a blood transfusion," said Thierry Peyrard, a medical biologist at EFS.
The French research team's discovery was officially recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) at a conference held in early June 2025 in Milan. Previously, ISBT only recognized 47 blood group systems, including common systems such as ABO and Rh.
Mr Peyrard said that a "very unusual" antibody was detected in the female patient in 2011, but at that time there was not enough technological capacity to analyse it further.
It wasn't until 2019, thanks to next-generation sequencing technology, that scientists were able to pinpoint the genetic mutation that leads to this rare blood type.
The woman is known to have inherited the mutated gene from both her parents, each carrying a copy of the rare gene. However, her two siblings do not carry the mutation.
