New fish species discovered with human teeth and “devil markings”

(NLDO) - The new fish species has been scientifically named Myloplus sauron, inspired by the eye of Sauron in the movie "Lord of the Rings".

In a study recently published in the scientific journal Neotropical Ichthyology, scientists have described a new species of fish lurking in the Amazon River, with an appearance that can be easily confused with a piranha, human-like teeth and a scary symbol on its body.

The new fish species, scientifically named Myloplus sauron, belongs to the genus Myloplus of the pacu family, a relative of the aggressive piranha.

According to Live Science, Myloplus sauron has many very special features.

It was not discovered because it had evolved an appearance almost identical to a species of the same genus, Myloplus chomburgkii, known since 1841.

In addition, co-author Rupert Collins, senior curator of fish at the Natural History Museum in London - UK, said the pattern on its body is identical to Sauron's eye, especially with the orange patches on the body.

Myloplus sauron might also give you a shock if it opens its mouth, because inside is a set of teeth that look very similar to ours. The authors say they evolved these flat, human-like teeth to make chewing plants easier.

In the past, pacu and piranha, both members of the family Serrasalmidae, were often thought of as fierce and bloodthirsty predators. But in fact, most of both groups are actually omnivores and prefer a mostly plant-based diet.

In addition to Myloplus chomburgkii, this species is also closely related to Myloplus aylans. It is possible that the three species had a common ancestor recently.

The researchers also identified a potential fourth pacu species in the Tapajós River, which looks similar to other species in the genus, but has large black spots instead of stripes on its sides. However, they are still investigating whether this species is a separate species or a subspecies of Myloplus chomburgkii.
