Accordingly, exercising from the age of 50 can "reverse" years of inactivity.

As the world's aging population grows and dementia, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis reach high levels, people of all ages want not only to live long but also to live well.

The physical fitness of people who start exercising at age 50 is similar to that of people who exercise regularly before age 50.

New research brings good news for people starting to exercise from the age of 50, especially women.

Research led by scientists at the University of Sydney (Australia), following more than 11,000 people, mainly women, found that age 50 is an important time to exercise, according to science magazine Science Alert.

The results found that people who consistently exercised at the recommended level (at least 150 minutes per week) for 15 years were in better physical shape than those who never or rarely exercised at the recommended level.

Notably, even people who did not exercise regularly before reaped benefits from the new habit.

Notably, the final results showed that the physical fitness of people who started exercising at age 50 was almost similar to that of people who regularly exercised before age 50, being 3 points higher than those who never or rarely exercised enough to meet the recommended level.

Our findings suggest that to maintain a good quality of life in your 70s, a good way to "compensate" for not exercising in your younger years is to become active from age 50, the researchers said.

Interestingly, the results also found that people who started exercising regularly in their 60s did not reap the same benefits as those who started exercising in their 50s.

The authors suggest that this may be due to not accumulating enough physical activity to provide clear health benefits by age 70.

Taken together with existing evidence, this study again demonstrates the benefits of exercise in midlife, the researchers concluded.
