Politico reported on June 2 that former US President Donald Trump has just created an account on TikTok, a social networking application that shares short videos of ByteDance Company (China), in a notable move when this application is being accused by Washington of having relations with Beijing.
On the evening of June 1 (local time), the former president posted a clip on the TikTok account @realDonaldTrump, showing him waving to supporters at a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fight he attended in Newark (New Jersey).
In the clip, UFC CEO Dana White introduces Mr. Trump as using TikTok. “It was my honor,” Mr. Trump replies over the event’s music.
How does the historic verdict affect Trump in the election?
Mr. Trump's move to join TikTok is seen as an effort to reach potential voters ahead of the November election, especially young people.
It comes as the video -sharing app faces a possible ban in the US unless it divests from its Chinese owner ByteDance.
"The campaign is on all fronts. Cross-platform reach is important and this is just one of many ways we're going to reach voters. TikTok skews to a younger audience," said a Trump adviser.
Mr Trump’s move to TikTok is another win for the app, after President Joe Biden’s campaign joined in February. It’s a sign that both campaigns see TikTok, which has 170 million users in the US, as a messaging tool worth pursuing, regardless of the controversy.
