US President Donald Trump said on January 31 that his team was engaged in "very serious" discussions with Russia about the conflict in Ukraine.

President Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin could soon take “major steps” toward ending the conflict.

"We're going to talk and I think we're probably going to do something meaningful. We want to end that war. That war wouldn't have started if I was president," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Mr Trump did not specify who in his administration had contacted the Russians, but stressed that discussions had taken place.

Asked whether he had personally spoken to President Putin, President Trump declined to answer directly: "I don't want to say that."

Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that a phone call between the Russian and US leaders is not currently scheduled because no agreement or common understanding has been reached on the issue. He noted that all communications are being conducted at the embassy level.

Mr Trump has pledged to negotiate a resolution to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. The US president is said to have given his special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, 100 days to come up with a solution to the conflict.

President Trump's special envoy for Ukraine said on January 31 that Washington has an interest in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

“This is in our national security interests,” Kellogg told Fox News.

Mr. Kellogg expects to make progress within the next 100 days.

"I just want to solve it in months, not years. I want us to be able to achieve something in the short term. I want to look back at the countdown from 100 days and see where we are, either a ceasefire or permanent peace . And I think all of those things are possible," Mr. Kellogg added.

According to him, resolving the conflict is good for both America and the world .

“I think we have a good, solid plan to move forward, to start negotiating and to do that,” Mr. Kellogg stressed.

Last week, President Trump threatened to impose new sanctions if Moscow refused to accept a “deal” to end the conflict. However, he maintained that he “does not want to hurt Russia”.

Russia stressed that military operations could only end if Ukraine committed to permanent neutrality, demilitarization and de-fascism, while also recognizing the "reality" of the territory.

Moscow has said it remains open to talks but stressed that any deal must include "credible, legally binding agreements aimed at eliminating the root causes of the conflict".
