Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, US President Donald Trump said he would speak with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on March 18.

Reuters on March 17 quoted US President Donald Trump as saying he planned to talk to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, following positive dialogue between Russian and US officials in Moscow.

"We'll see if we can bring the war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can't, but I think we have a very good chance," he told reporters on Air Force One while traveling from Maryland to Washington DC on March 16 (local time).

"I will speak with President Putin on Tuesday (March 18). A lot of work was done over the weekend," he added.

Mr Trump is trying to win Mr Putin's support for a 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine accepted last week.

On the plane, the White House chief said discussions were ongoing about “dividing up some of the assets” between the warring parties. “I think we’ll talk about land… we’ll talk about power plants,” he shared.

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

On March 14, the Kremlin said Mr Putin had sent Mr Trump a message about the ceasefire plan through US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressing "cautious optimism" that a deal could be reached to end the more than three-year conflict.

Speaking to the Izvestia newspaper on March 17, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Moscow would seek firm guarantees in any peace deal that NATO countries would exclude Kyiv from membership and that Ukraine would remain neutral.

"We will demand that solid security guarantees be part of this agreement. Part of these guarantees must be Ukraine's neutrality, the refusal of NATO countries to accept it into the alliance," he said.

In another development, TASS news agency on March 17 quoted Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko emphasizing that Russia always urges Europe to negotiate to establish a common security framework.

According to her, "a regrettable fate awaits" if Europe does not stop its anti-Russian attitude. "The idea of common European security without the participation of Russia and Belarus is a fantasy. Everyone understands this," she stressed.
