With this approach, it has opened up a new direction of economic development for local people.
Green squash, chayote, and squash are easy to grow, have high productivity, can be preserved for a long time... have high economic value, and are easy to sell.
This is a short-term climbing plant, only 90 days from planting to harvest and can be harvested 5 to 6 times a year with a selling price of 5,000 to 17,000 VND/kg depending on the time.
Currently, people are harvesting chayote. After harvesting chayote, people plant squash and pumpkin regularly, following the seasonal method.
To ensure that climbing plants grow well, instead of building traditional bamboo trellises, people poured concrete columns and tied fishing lines to create trellises.

With the acumen and spirit of learning and striving to develop the economy from the garden, up to now, Viet Lam Town has nearly 38 households participating with over 13 hectares of nets. The net area is mainly concentrated in Group 7, Group 10 and Group 11.
From the form of individual production, each person doing their own thing, in April 2021, Viet Lam town established a Safe Vegetable Cooperative with 10 participating households, which has now increased to 14 households.
Join the Cooperative Group to build a local safe vegetable brand. This is a determined direction to aim for a clean, safe food source, ensuring food safety for consumers.
Green squash grown on trellises brings in hundreds of millions of dong in revenue each year in Viet Lam town, Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province.
Thanks to that, each hectare of vegetables grown on the trellis brings in an average of 230 million VND. Depending on the area, each household earns an average of 160-200 million VND/year, with some households earning over 300 million VND/year.
Developing a model of growing vegetables on trellises to shift the crop structure, create stable jobs, and increase income for the town's people has had initial successes.
However, most of the products of vegetable growers here still reach consumers' meals mainly through local markets or through familiar family customers. That inevitably leads to unstable product prices and unstable output.
Understanding that, the People's Committee of Viet Lam town regularly opens training courses on science and technology, advising people to plant trees suitable to local soil conditions, and not to massively plant one type of tree, to avoid a situation where supply exceeds demand.
