Dark urine after gym, when is it a dangerous sign?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/10/2023

Normal urine is slightly yellow. It is normal for urine to change color occasionally. White urine is a sign that the body is drinking a lot of water. On the contrary, dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Intense exercise can cause dark urine.

For people taking medication, the side effects of the medication can cause urine to turn light green or orange. All of these signs are completely normal.

During intense exercise, dark urine is usually due to dehydration. However, in rare cases, dark urine after intense exercise may be related to exercise-induced hematuria or rhabdomyolysis. These two conditions share some symptoms. However, exercise-induced hematuria is not dangerous, while rhabdomyolysis can lead to serious consequences. Therefore, it is important to identify and differentiate between the two conditions.

Exercise-induced hematuria is usually short-lived and not a health concern. The typical symptom is dark urine. This discoloration is caused by strenuous exercise disrupting the body’s natural blood filtration process, causing blood to leak into the urine.

This condition is common in people who engage in high-intensity exercise, such as athletes who run for many miles or people who do high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Exercise-induced hematuria is temporary and usually resolves within 3 days.

However, a study in the journal Renal Failure looked at 500 people with exercise-induced hematuria who developed the condition after running about 5 km. The researchers found that some people may have dark urine for 7 to 14 days before it goes away. However, experts recommend that if after 3 days your urine is still dark or you are urinating less than usual, you should see a doctor immediately.

What is rhabdomyolysis?

Meanwhile, rhabdomyolysis also causes dark urine symptoms but is often accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, weakness and swelling in a certain muscle area. At that time, the patient must go to the hospital as soon as possible because rhabdomyolysis is a very dangerous condition.

With dark urine symptoms, if exercise-induced hematuria is due to blood leaking into the urine, rhabdomyolysis is due to kidney damage. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which a group of muscles is severely damaged, causing proteins in the muscle to be released into the blood. The kidneys filter the blood and these proteins become toxic to the kidneys, causing kidney damage and even kidney failure.

To treat rhabdomyolysis, doctors will apply methods such as intravenous fluids, dialysis, medication, surgery and some other methods, according to Healthline .
