On the morning of July 16, Tran Xuan Dam, a 12A1 student at My Loc High School, Ninh Binh Province ( Nam Dinh City, former Nam Dinh Province), was overwhelmed with emotion when he learned that he had become one of the two valedictorians nationwide in the 2025 high school graduation exam with a total score of 39/40 points in 4 subjects.
Dam's scores for each subject include: Math 10 points, Physics 10, Literature 9.25 points, Chemistry 9.75.
Valedictorian does not study extra
In the recent exam, poor student Tran Xuan Dam did not have the opportunity to take extra classes like many other students. Dam built his own study method and always set clear goals for each day. Before entering the exam room, Dam said that he had prepared a strong mentality and solid knowledge.

“My family is not rich, I do not take extra classes, but in class I always try to grasp the knowledge that the teachers teach. If I do not understand something, I will ask the teacher immediately to get the answer.”
After school, Dam comes home to help his parents with housework, then reviews his lessons until 11pm. In the morning, Dam usually wakes up at 4:30am to study. Dam believes that studying is not a pressure, but a serious journey while still maintaining a relaxed and passionate spirit.
“Every day I review, I set a clear goal of how many questions I will do for this subject. After finishing, I will rest to relax my mind. If I am tired, I allow myself to rest, but it will not affect the long-term plan I have set,” Dam shared.
The concerns of a poor valedictorian
While at work, Mr. Tran Xuan Thiem and his wife, Ms. Bui Thi Luu (Dam's parents), received a call from their son with the news. Hearing the good news from their son, the couple was extremely happy.
Mr. Thiem and his wife both work as construction workers, and also cultivate more than one acre of rice fields. During the harvest season, Mr. Thiem and his wife will go out to sow rice, spray pesticides, etc. to earn money to send their four children to school. The biggest wish of the poor couple is to try to ensure that their children can study properly.
“When I was young, my family was very poor, I had many siblings, I did not go to school so I am still illiterate. That is why I always encourage my children to study hard to escape poverty and hardship like their parents. When we heard that our child got high results in the exam, my husband and I were very happy,” said Bui Thi Luu (Dam’s mother) emotionally.

Dam said that when he went to Hanoi to study, the burden would fall on his parents' shoulders, so Dam thought a lot (Photo: Minh Tuyen).
Talking about future plans, Dam will pursue his passion of studying Control and Automation Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Dam believes that getting a high score in the recent exam is not his destination but still a long journey. His family is not well off, when Dam goes to Hanoi to study, the burden will be placed on Dam's parents' shoulders even more, so Dam is extremely worried.
“I don’t think that the recent exam is my destination and success, but it is still a journey. When I go to Hanoi to study, the burden will be on my parents’ shoulders, so I have thought a lot to find a way to help my parents and realize my dream. My family is not rich, my dream is high, so I have to try my best,” Dam said emotionally.
The poor student also clearly outlined his future direction when entering university. Dam said that in the first semester, he would still rely on his parents to pay for his tuition. But Dam would try to get a scholarship from the school and planned to work as a tutor to cover his living expenses.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong Don, homeroom teacher of class 12A1, proudly talks about her student, Dam is a very intelligent, energetic and active student who helps his friends, as well as always proactively supports teachers in all activities.
“I was not too surprised by Dam’s recent exam results. Dam always has a plan and sets very clear goals. Once he sets a goal, he always tries his best to achieve it. In the recent exam, Dam also set a goal and worked hard silently,” said Ms. Don.
