Are you patient?

At the seminar "Developing students' legal practice skills to meet job market requirements" recently organized by Hanoi Law University, lawyer Duong Quoc Thanh, Director of ALV Lawyers Law Firm, told a recruitment story where the candidates were university graduates majoring in law.

"During the interview, I only asked one question: are you a hard-working person? This is a question I often use with all candidates when recruiting. But this time, we are recruiting people for foreign customers, big investors in Vietnam. Candidates are all ready to show their competence and intelligence. Therefore, when asked that question, they were all surprised," said Mr. Thanh.

According to lawyer Thanh, the candidates are very capable people (shown through their profiles), all ready to join the high-quality human resources team. Therefore, your competitive factor is diligence.

"If we are not diligent, we cannot even do very simple tasks in a law firm," said lawyer Thanh.

Many law students have difficulty in recruitment.

According to many experts, the legal industry requires fierce competition. The measure of the capacity of human resources in the legal industry, in addition to knowledge, is the ability to practice. In which, "diligence" is an important quality to achieve good practice ability.

During the learning process, law students are trained to be "hard-working" through practical learning content. Only by being hard-working can they learn basic legal skills such as reading books, finding documents, exploiting information from the internet, using technology...

Dr. Tran Kim Lieu, Director of the Center for Legal Practice, Hanoi Law University, said that although it is the country's leading training institution in the field of law, the school is not satisfied with the professional capacity of its students.

A survey in 2021, 2022, and 2023 showed that 6-11% of students were still unemployed 12 months after graduation. For students who already had jobs, jobs unrelated to their training accounted for nearly 18% of the year. Dr. Lieu said: "Lack of soft skills and professional skills is one of the reasons why many law students have difficulty recruiting."

Law profession requires internship from year 1

According to lawyer Nguyen Trong Nghia, ICA Legal Training Academy, to help students develop practical skills, law schools need to change their training mindset a bit.

"Usually schools think that students in their third or fourth year need to do internships. In reality, you need to start earlier, from your first or second year, with the smallest jobs at law firms or businesses to gain basic skills," said lawyer Nghia.

According to Judge Vu Quang Dung (Gia Lam District People's Court, Hanoi), the court system attracts many legal professionals, so law students need to experience "court life" early and need to be able to practice while still a student.

Universities need to allocate adequate time for practice in their training programs. Particularly for trial activities, training students in the skills of presenting cases and arguing in court (mock trials, real trials) is very important.

Judge Vu Quang Dung also said that under the direction of the Supreme People's Court and the courts of neighboring areas, the Judicial Academy will conduct actual trials in the academy, in a hall with a capacity of 500 people. Students regularly observing the skills, methods, and management methods of the presiding judges will create a very good mindset for the profession.

"Recently, I tried a civil case at the Court Academy, connected to more than 30 points of connection which are district-level procuracies. If law schools contact the Court Academy to connect online with these trials so that students can learn, it would be very good," said judge Vu Quang Dung.
