In the first tuna auction of the year at Toyosu fish market, Tokyo on January 5, a 238kg bluefin tuna caught off the coast of Oma, Aomori, was sold for 114.24 million yen (789,000 USD).

This price became the fourth highest in the history of the New Year tuna auction in Japan since the record began in 1999 and far surpassed last year's 36.04 million yen.

According to Kyodo News, the two winning bidders were Yamayuki, a Tokyo-based wholesaler, and the company that operates the Ginza Onodera Sushi restaurant chain. The meat from the tuna will be sold at food stores in Tokyo. The record price for tuna auctions in the first quarter of the year was 333.6 million yen, paid for a 278kg tuna in 2019. This was also the first auction to take place at Toyosu after Tokyo's main fish market moved there from Tsukiji.
