The book is nearly 800 pages thick, consisting of 12 chapters, depicting important historical periods spanning from the 11th century to the early 21st century regarding the change of power, administrative reforms and socio-cultural transformation in the Upper and Northwest regions of Vietnam. Associate Professor, historian Philippe Le Failler is the Chief Representative of the French School of the Far East in Hanoi ; has 35 years of research on Vietnam, famous for many research works on Vietnamese history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Sharing at the book launch, he said that when he came to Vietnam for work, he learned Vietnamese, from which the book "Song Da: History of a Vietnamese border region" was created; during the process of making the book, he also faced many major challenges in terms of historical, cultural and linguistic materials.
