Iran's judiciary's Mizan Online website reported on January 6 that Roya Heshmati was sentenced to 74 lashes for not covering her head in public in the capital Tehran.

"The 74 lashes punishment was carried out in accordance with the law and according to Sharia law for violating public morals," Mizan said.

After the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran required all women to cover their necks and heads when appearing in public.

Flogging for dress code violations is not common in Iran, although officials have increasingly punished violators after the practice grew during anti -government protests that began in late 2022.

The protests came after Mahsa Amini, 22, died while in custody for allegedly violating the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

Iranian police also installed cameras in public places to identify women violating mandatory dress codes.

Iran's parliament has also discussed a bill that would toughen penalties for those who violate dress codes.
