On October 20, Dr. Truong Van Tai, Department of Aesthetics, Microplastic Surgery and Orthopedic Trauma, Minh Anh International Hospital (HCMC) said that the hospital had just received a female patient, VTT (41 years old, living in Dong Thap ), who had 5 fingers of her right hand crushed by a meat grinder.

Accordingly, patient T. worked at a meat grinder for animal feed in Dong Thap. While grinding meat, the patient's right hand was accidentally caught in the meat grinder, crushing 5 fingers.

After having 5 fingers crushed by a meat grinder, the patient was taken to Dong Thap Provincial Hospital for surgery to reconstruct the amputated tips of his fingers.

After that, the patient was admitted to Minh Anh International Hospital for treatment with the desire to have surgery to convert his toes into fingers.

Doctor Truong Van Tai and his team took the second toe of the female patient's right foot and attached it to the female patient's right index finger.

The microsurgery lasted 11 hours, and the toe attached to the finger is now doing well.

Toes have been grafted to replace fingers.

According to Dr. Truong Van Tai, to reconstruct fingers, whether functionally or aesthetically, toe transfer is a widely accepted option.

To select the right patient for this type of surgery, a thorough, multifactorial assessment is required, focusing on the extent of the stump, the number of digits involved, the patient's age and parental motivation (in children), and the patient's needs and motivation (in adults).

And when toe-to-hand transplantation is considered as a reconstructive option, the morbidity of the graft site should be discussed extensively with the patient and family. Although foot function for most walking activities is not limited after amputation of one or two toes, it may be limited to some extent for specific activities such as certain sports .

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital have received victims whose fingers and hands were crushed by meat grinders and sugarcane juicers, some of whom had to have their limbs amputated.

Doctors advise people who work with machines such as meat grinders, sugarcane juicers, stamping machines... to be careful to avoid unfortunate accidents.

In the world , toe-to-finger transfer was performed in the late 19th century. Since that time, the advent of microsurgery has revolutionized toe-to-finger transfer.

In Vietnam, Professor Nguyen Huy Phan successfully transferred the second toe to restore the thumb in 1988, marking a new development in finger restoration surgery in our country.
