Shared home for homeless elderly

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Having no place to live and no longer having enough health to make a living, many lonely and homeless elderly people are taken in and cared for by the Social Protection Center No. 2 in Sam Son Ward. Under the common roof, these men and women are "resurrected", erasing the inferiority complex and loneliness of the elderly to live happily and healthily.

Shared home for homeless elderly

Social work staff regularly advise and understand the feelings of the elderly being cared for at the center.

Having suffered a stroke and having difficulty walking, every day Mrs. Tran Thi Tham in Hoa Loc commune still rolls her wheelchair into the hallway or goes to the elderly room in the center to chat with everyone. Although cheerful and sociable, when talking about her unfortunate husband, Mrs. Tham cannot help but feel sad. Her husband died and she had no children, while her old age and constant illness have made her life very difficult. Sympathizing with her situation, the commune government made a file to send her to the center to have someone to take care of her and keep her company, and to date she has been attached to the center for 13 years.

“Here, I always feel the love of the staff and no longer live alone, nor worry about whether I have enough or not. When I am sick, the staff here take care of me wholeheartedly and like family, helping lonely and disabled people like me no longer live in sadness,” Ms. Tham shared.

Having “seniority” at the center, for the past 15 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy (from Quang Tri province, married to Thanh Hoa), has always considered the center as her second home. Ms. Thuy has a miserable fate, her husband died early, she raised her two children alone, but her eldest son died in a traffic accident, her second son got sick and then also “left” her one by one. Living alone, old age, illness, sometimes lonely and sad, she thought of suicide, should she also follow her husband and children? However, with the encouragement of the local government as well as relatives and neighbors, she gradually recovered her spirit to live the rest of her life.

Ms. Thuy said: “I always tell people that the center is a happy home, because here I live in a cool, clean environment and no longer have to worry about housing, electricity and water bills at the end of the month. Every day I get to eat and drink, when I am sick I get examined and take medicine. There are even times when the aunts and uncles arrange family matters, take me to the hospital for examination and take care of me when I am seriously ill. I feel warm and happy.”

Social Protection Center No. 2 currently nurtures and cares for 52 lonely elderly people with no place to rely on, including 25 lonely elderly people with extremely severe disabilities. The oldest person is nearly 100 years old, the longest person has been here for over 20 years. Head of the Social Work Team of Social Protection Center No. 2 Do Thi Lien said: "When receiving subjects here for nurturing, the staff and employees in the center always carefully understand the circumstances of each person to create closeness and friendliness in conversation. From there, they advise and encourage the spirit to help the elderly overcome their inferiority complex and self-esteem, and together with the members of the center, always love and help each other in life."

Over the years, to help the subjects change their psychology in a positive direction and have stable health, right from the time they are accepted for care, the center checks the health of each person and creates a monitoring book, handing them over to the direct care department. In the care departments, staff are assigned to regularly monitor and closely check the health status; classify the subjects for scientific and effective care. At the same time, weekly meetings are held at the departments to grasp the situation of the subjects and thoroughly educate cadres, civil servants, and workers to be serious and close in managing and caring for the subjects. Medical staff regularly visit and monitor the health of the elderly, common diseases are treated on the spot; for serious diseases that are beyond the treatment capacity, they will be referred to hospitals for examination and treatment.

In addition to health care, the team of nurses, caregivers, and nutritionists also develop daily menus suitable for the elderly's medical conditions. The elderly also participate in rehabilitation, sports , cultural and artistic activities, thereby creating a useful playground, improving health and spirit.

Each person has a different situation and fate, but in this common home, the elderly no longer feel lonely or inferior, because they always receive attention, care and love from the staff at the center as well as the companionship and sharing of people in the same situation. In a warm home with people who always know how to love and share, it has helped the homeless elderly find joy and motivation to live a useful life in their old age.
