Russia considers Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist a 'foreign agent'

VnExpressVnExpress02/09/2023

Russia has placed journalist Dmitry Muratov, who won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, on its list of "foreign agents".

"Muratov used foreign platforms to spread views aimed at creating a negative attitude towards the domestic and foreign policy of the Russian Federation," the Russian Justice Ministry said on September 1. The agency also accused Muratov of writing and spreading content from foreign agencies.

Muratov is the editor of Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's leading independent media outlets that regularly publishes critical views on a wide range of issues.

After Muratov was listed as a foreign agent, Novaya Gazeta's website posted: "Any comment? Please contact the Ministry of Justice."

Russia’s foreign agent list currently includes 674 individuals and entities. Individuals and entities placed on the list are subject to stricter administrative requirements, including disclosure of funding sources and the need to tag posts, including on social media. This puts agents and those who share the content at risk of severe penalties.

In 2021, when Muratov co-received the Nobel Peace Prize, he announced that the award would be dedicated to the "fallen" journalists of Novaya Gazeta who had "died for their profession".

Since 2000, Novaya Gazeta has recorded six murdered journalists and contributors, including renowned investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya, who was shot dead in Moscow in 2006.
