Not only is the lotus a plant with cultural value, it can also be exploited comprehensively. From seeds, tubers, shoots, flowers to leaves, lotus hearts... all can be used as food, medicine or processed into specialty products. In each lotus blooming season, people not only harvest flowers and seeds but also make the most of each part to create product lines for consumption and gifts. Growing lotus also contributes to improving the soil, cleaning water sources, creating ecological landscapes and promoting agricultural tourism.
Along with the process of expanding raw material areas, recently, many establishments and enterprises in Hung Yen have invested in deep processing of lotus products. Typically in the processing sector, Vinagri Agricultural Products Production - Trade and Export Company Limited (Khoai Chau) has invested billions of VND to build factories and equip modern machinery to serve the processing of lotus-embedded longan products, a delicate combination of the sweet and chewy taste of longan and the crunchy taste of lotus seeds. In addition, the company also produces crispy lotus and crispy fresh lotus products, these two products are recognized as 3-star OCOP. In particular, the company's lotus-embedded longan product is recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as meeting 4-star OCOP standards. Each year, the company produces about 10 - 12 tons of lotus-embedded longan, crispy lotus, and crispy fresh lotus. With eye-catching packaging and convenient storage, the selling price is up to 600,000 VND/kg of lotus-embedded longan; Crispy lotus seeds cost more than 200,000 VND/kg, 2-3 times higher than traditional dried longan. The product not only conquers the domestic market but also has export potential.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang (Hung Yen city) said: Currently, her production and business establishment has 4 products from lotus: lotus seeds, dried lotus seeds, lotus heart tea, lotus-embracing longan. Of which, lotus-embracing longan has been recognized as 3-star OCOP since 2022. The products are packaged in gift sets and sell very well. Each year, the establishment consumes about 2 tons of lotus seeds from Hung Yen.
Not only present at OCOP booths in the province, products from Hung Yen lotus are gradually asserting their position on e-commerce platforms. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Thuy, Hung Dao commune (Tien Lu), owner of an online business booth said: Lotus-hugging longan is the best-selling product in my booth. Customers buy it as gifts or for long-term use, the product is delicious, easy to preserve, and has a strong hometown flavor.
In 2023, the Intellectual Property Office ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) granted the Certificate of registration of the trademark "Hung Yen Lotus". Accordingly, 8 products from Hung Yen lotus belonging to 3 main groups are protected: tea group (lotus heart tea, lotus tea), processed group (dried lotus seeds, instant dried lotus seeds, lotus jam) and fresh group (fresh lotus root, fresh lotus seeds, fresh lotus flowers). Building and protecting the trademark not only affirms the value of local agricultural products but also opens up great opportunities in promoting and expanding the market.
According to information from the Rural Development Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment), the province currently has 15 lotus products recognized as meeting OCOP standards from 3 to 4 stars. In order to continue to enhance the value and sustainable development of the "Hung Yen Lotus" brand, in the coming time, departments, branches and local authorities will step up support for brand building associated with geographical indication protection; review and re-plan concentrated lotus growing areas; strengthen promotion and marketing of lotus products through many forms such as: trade promotion for OCOP products from 3 stars or higher, organizing fairs and exhibitions to introduce OCOP products, etc.
