Anyone can join the learning

From phase 2 (2023-2024), the Khanh Hoa English Speaking People Program has promoted online classes to expand opportunities for those who are inconvenient to travel or live far from English clubs. Teaching via Zoom allows students to easily participate from anywhere, in line with technology trends and modern learning habits.

According to Mr. Doan Van Tien - professional manager in charge of the class, the difficulty in managing online classes is that the number of students fluctuates each session, some traditional activities need to be adjusted to suit the virtual environment. In addition, teachers must maintain high energy to keep the class connected, handle unexpected technical problems. In the past time, professional volunteers including students, specialized teachers with bachelor's and master's degrees with teaching experience at prestigious English centers have not only actively imparted knowledge but also created a friendly, fun atmosphere by integrating games, role-playing activities, group work... Thanks to the private zalo class group system, students have the opportunity to exchange lessons, update class schedules and maintain connections like a miniature community. Through interactive activities such as group discussions and debates, learners not only improve their language skills but also develop critical thinking and social skills.

Currently, the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program is implementing Foundation 5 and Foundation 6 classes for beginners. Of which, Foundation 5 is for students under 18 years old (studying on Tuesday and Friday evenings every week), Foundation 6 is for students 18 years old and above (studying on Wednesday evenings every week). The learning content revolves around everyday communication situations such as asking for information, giving directions, occupations, colors, weather, etc., helping students get acquainted and confidently use English at a basic level.

In addition, the program also has an Advanced 3 class, held every Thursday evening for students who have a foundation in English and want to improve their speaking, debating and presenting skills. With diverse topics such aseducation , environment, media, business, etc., students not only expand their vocabulary but also approach social issues in English. Debate and group discussion activities take place regularly, helping students get used to expressing their opinions clearly and sharply.

Students progress and become more confident

One of the interesting points of online classes is the diversity in the composition and participants, from students, civil servants, employees to small traders, workers, people working in the tourism and service industries, taxi drivers, cyclo drivers... It is known that the zalo community group of online English classes currently has more than 1,000 members; in which, each class ranges from 25 to 50 students. In addition to Khanh Hoa residents, the classes also have students from neighboring localities.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Minh, a professional volunteer and teacher of Advanced 3 class, shared: “In online classes, the most difficult thing is how to connect the whole class, maintain the learning rhythm and inspire each lesson. Over time, the students have improved a lot, not only in their English proficiency but also in their approach to different topics as well as improving their social knowledge."

According to Mr. Nguyen The Hai, a professional volunteer and teacher of basic English classes, community classes create a sense of closeness, students are friendly, proactive and often interact with teachers. Teaching online, teachers can easily use learning support tools such as images, videos, vocabulary sharing boards... to make the lessons more vivid. During online teaching, sometimes the Internet connection is unstable from the students' side, some students lose connection or cannot turn on the mic, camera, causing the interaction to be interrupted. To overcome this, he often uses the chatbox so that students can reply in text. In addition, he also designs more flexible activities to suit the lessons.

According to the assessment of the teaching volunteers, after a period of study, the students have made significant progress, especially in their confidence in communicating and responding in English. Many students were initially shy to speak, but after a few sessions, they actively spoke up, asked questions and participated in games in English. Their skills have improved a lot, especially listening and speaking skills because the lessons focused on direct interaction.

In the advanced class, Kevin - the second prize winner of the Golden Bell English competition at the elementary level, Ben - a student who actively debates and searches for information, Julia - the class vice-president with a clear presentation style... In the basic class, many people remember student Lily (the English name commonly used by students in the class) who has very good pronunciation and speaking English, often answering fluently and clearly in speaking activities; student Hao Nhien often adds new vocabulary to the chatbox for other students to learn and actively support the class; Tom and Hoang Khanh are eager to learn and enthusiastic members. Nguyen Minh Thu, a student of the basic English class, shared: “Before, I was very shy about speaking English, especially when meeting foreigners because I was afraid of saying it wrong and not being understood. Since taking the online English class of the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program, I feel much more confident than before. The lessons are interesting and useful, not only helping me gain more knowledge and foreign language skills but also making many new friends who share the same interest in learning English.”

Mr. Doan Van Tien said that in the coming time, the program plans to expand the size of the class, develop new content suitable for many subjects, from children, adults, to workers. This is an important foundation to prepare people to integrate with the world in the digital age.
