"This afternoon, April 17, 2024, according to the assessment of the medical team, the patient's condition is unlikely to survive, the family has proactively asked to take the patient home to arrange the funeral.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee and more than 10,000 athletes, we are deeply saddened and offer our condolences to the family. We hope that the running community will join in commemorating and sharing this immense pain and loss with the family," the Tay Ho Half Marathon Organizing Committee announced.
Previously, as Dan Tri reported, on the morning of April 14, a male athlete participating in the half-marathon (21.1km) suddenly collapsed 100m before the finish line and had circulatory arrest.
The patient was very young, born in 1990. At about 5:55 a.m., the patient collapsed on the track, about 100 meters from the finish line.
Immediately, the race medical team leader examined and assessed the patient's condition.
The results showed that the patient had stopped circulating, so the medical team performed first aid measures such as chest compressions, balloon compression, oxygen therapy, adrenaline injection, and fluid infusion.
The patient was transferred by ambulance and emergency team to Hanoi Heart Hospital, branch 2 at 6:25.
Here, the patient received active resuscitation measures from the emergency department, online consultation with Bach Mai Hospital, and direct support from the outpatient emergency team of Bach Mai Hospital at the hospital.
By the afternoon of April 17, assessing that the patient's condition was unlikely to improve, the family proactively asked to take the patient home to arrange the funeral.
After the incident of a young man suffering cardiac arrest right before the finish line of the Tay Ho Half Marathon on April 14, the Department of Physical Training and Sports requested to strengthen safety measures for athletes participating in the amateur race.
"For mass sports tournaments, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decentralized management to localities. Circular No. 09/2012 of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also clearly stipulates this and requires tournaments to ensure the requirements on facilities and necessary professional equipment when organizing.
However, in the face of many mass sports events that have not ensured safety, such as the recent Tay Ho race, we have directed the Athletics Federation to develop safety standards for races to further enhance the health of participating athletes," Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet informed Dan Tri reporter.
