Opening a new development stage of the traditional Vietnam-Estonia cooperative relationship

Within the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Estonia, on the afternoon of June 5 (local time), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Hussar at the Estonian Parliament headquarters.

Speaker of the National Assembly Lauri Hussar expressed his pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife, along with the high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Government, on their first official visit to the Republic of Estonia. Emphasizing Vietnam's role and position in the Asia- Pacific region, Speaker of the National Assembly Lauri Hussar affirmed that Vietnam is one of Estonia's important partners in Southeast Asia and said that the visit is a good opportunity for the two countries to deepen their cooperative relations in the coming time.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his pleasure to visit the beautiful and hospitable country of Estonia; thanked Estonia for its warm and sincere welcome and conveyed the greetings of General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament.

The Prime Minister thanked Estonia for its support and assistance to Vietnam in its cause of national liberation, reunification and current national construction.

Expressing his delight at the positive development of bilateral relations in recent times, the Prime Minister believed that the visit would contribute to creating a breakthrough, opening a new development stage of the good traditional cooperative relationship, commensurate with the potential and cooperation between the two countries.

Sharing with the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament about the similarities between the two countries in terms of the aspiration for independence and the aspiration to rise up, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh informed the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament about Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements; emphasizing that Vietnam aims to become a modern industrialized country by 2030 and a high-income developed country by 2045.

On that basis, Vietnam always considers science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as the key driving force, decisive factor and foundation for the country's sustainable development and Estonia is a leading country in startups, innovation, a model of innovation, e-government, digital economy, digital society, digital citizenship that Vietnam wishes to learn from.

The two leaders agreed that the two countries need to increase contacts and exchange delegations at all levels, further promoting economic-trade-investment relations, especially in the context of complicated developments in the world political and economic situation. Vietnam is ready to create favorable conditions for Estonian businesses to invest in Vietnam.

The Prime Minister suggested that the two sides soon establish a Friendship Parliamentarians' Group of the two countries' National Assemblies to promote the exchange of specific measures to enhance political trust and mutual understanding.

The Prime Minister also asked the Estonian Parliament to support and promote the early establishment of the Vietnam-Estonia Joint Committee on economic, scientific, technological and innovation cooperation; and to actively urge the parliaments of some EU countries to soon ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) to create new momentum for bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

For his part, Speaker of the National Assembly Lauri Hussar highly appreciated the Vietnam-Estonia relationship in general and the parliamentary relationship in particular, which are developing positively and have much potential to be exploited in the future. Speaker of the National Assembly Lauri Hussar affirmed that Estonia wishes to expand relations with Southeast Asia and believes that the bridging role of Vietnam and Estonia as well as the good relationship between the two countries will be a catalyst to add momentum to EU-ASEAN cooperation in the coming time.

The two sides agreed to promote dialogue mechanisms and regular delegation exchanges, enhance cooperation and share information and experience in many fields, including legislation. The two sides also agreed to support each other at inter-parliamentary forums.

The Prime Minister asked the Estonian Parliament to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work in Estonia, continuing to be a bridge between the two peoples.

The two sides also discussed a number of international and regional issues of mutual concern. Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides affirmed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea on the basis of respecting the interests of coastal states in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), peacefully resolving disputes on the basis of international law, and not using or threatening to use force.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh conveyed the invitation to visit Vietnam from National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Hussar. The Speaker of the Estonian Parliament happily accepted the invitation.
