The Vietnam Women's Union ( VWU) in collaboration with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and the Standing Committee of the Quang Binh Provincial Women's Union organized a rally on natural disaster prevention and climate change adaptation (CC), responding to the Month of Action for the Environment.
Natural disasters and climate change are currently issues of concern to all countries in the world . Vietnam is considered one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. In particular, Quang Binh is a coastal province, due to its geographical location, climate and terrain characteristics are very complex, under the impact of climate change, so it often suffers from natural disasters with high frequency and severity.
According to statistics from 2010 to present, the province has suffered more than 17 storms, 34 floods, including major floods, historic floods occurring during major storms or due to the influence of tropical depressions and the Northeast monsoon. Natural disasters have caused heavy damage to property and human lives; disrupted livelihoods and lives, creating additional burdens for people, especially women.
To contribute to minimizing the impacts of natural disasters, in recent times, women's unions at all levels have closely coordinated with the government and relevant departments to organize many practical activities, such as: Propagating and mobilizing women's union officials and members to participate in natural disaster prevention work in conjunction with the union's work tasks; guiding people to effectively implement the "4 on-site" motto.
Pilot models of climate change adaptation are deployed based on ecosystems to ensure sustainable development goals, harmonizing socio -economic benefits and biodiversity conservation; mobilizing women members to participate in planting trees, collecting waste, and building green-clean-beautiful landscapes in residential areas.
At the rally, the representative of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union called on women's unions at all levels to actively participate in natural disaster prevention and control activities, protect the environment, effectively implement solutions to adapt to climate change, join hands to build a sustainable community to adapt to natural disasters.
