Shrimp paste becomes OCOP product, exported to Japan and Australia

For a long time, shrimp paste has been a rustic dish of Vietnamese people, but now it has become an OCOP product, exported to Japan, Australia, and even to restaurants selling vermicelli with shrimp paste in New York - USA, according to information from a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Sharing information at the seminar on increasing OCOP product consumption channels, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on December 26 in Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that by mid-December 2023, the number of OCOP products updated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was 11,054 products (an increase of more than 1,100 products compared to the data 1 month ago), exceeding the target for the entire period of 2021-2025 (the target is 10,000 products).

But the more impressive point is that the quality of OCOP products has been greatly enhanced and improved. Science and technology have been applied and many new products have been created, not only purely based on local values but also truly meeting the needs of modern consumers.

Along with that, the design and packaging have been significantly improved, not simply simple packaging as before, but now there are many types of modern, impressive packaging. The product story is also shown.

According to Mr. Tien, all OCOP products recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development meet food safety and hygiene standards as well as Vietnam's technical standards such as ISO, HACCP, GAP. Some 5-star or potential 5-star OCOP products even meet world market standards.

In terms of trade, in the early stages, OCOP products were mainly focused on the domestic market (sometimes only within the province or district). But now, many products have expanded to the national market and some have been exported.

Previously, we often only thought of exporting products such as rice and nuts. “But now, even specialty products such as shrimp paste can be exported,” Mr. Tien shared.

Specifically, Mr. Tien informed that in 2023, Le Gia shrimp paste was exported to Japan and Australia, and vermicelli from a facility in Binh Lieu district (Quang Ninh) will also be exported to Europe and Australia.

“These OCOP products are not only traditional Vietnamese dishes, but are now also beginning to be accepted by friends and the world market with OCOP product standards. Thanks to that, we have seen restaurants selling vermicelli with fermented shrimp paste in New York - USA”, Mr. Tien acknowledged and affirmed, that shows a fundamental change in quality as well as food standards that our OCOP products have met.
