Israeli forces level Jabalia, intensify airstrikes on Rafah

Simultaneous Israeli attacks in both the northern and southern Gaza Strip this month have triggered a new exodus of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, reducing aid supplies and raising the risk of famine.

In Jabalia, a sprawling refugee camp built for displaced civilians 75 years ago, the Israeli army used bulldozers to clear shops and property near the local market.

Israel said it had returned to the camp, to prevent the militant group that controls Gaza from regrouping. In a summary of operations yesterday, the Israeli military said it had destroyed “around 70 terrorist targets” across the Gaza Strip, including military sites, weapons depots, rocket launchers and observation posts.

Palestinian doctors said Israeli missiles hit the emergency department of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Jabalia, causing panic among staff who rushed out patients still on beds and stretchers.

"The first missile hit the entrance of the emergency department. We tried to go in, then the second missile hit and the third hit a nearby building. We couldn't go back inside with the patients…", said Hussam Abu Safia, the hospital's director.

Residents and medical staff said Israeli tanks were surrounding another Jabalia hospital, Al-Awda Hospital.

In Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said sick and injured people in northern Gaza were running out of options. “These are the only two functional hospitals left in northern Gaza,” he said.

More than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza war, now in its eighth month, according to Gaza's health ministry. At least 10,000 others are missing and believed to be trapped under destroyed buildings.

The fighting has also flattened much of this densely populated coastal region, destroying homes, schools, hospitals and creating a dire humanitarian crisis.

UNRWA, the main UN agency in Gaza, said on Tuesday that food distribution had been suspended in Rafah due to lack of supplies and insecurity. Israel is targeting Rafah to root out what it says are four remaining Hamas militant battalions hiding there.
