At around 5:30 p.m. on May 17, a heavy rain lasted for about an hour in Tanh Linh district. During the rain, a tornado suddenly appeared, completely blowing off the roof of a house and partially blowing off the roofs of 4 houses, the dome roofs, and collapsing walls in villages 2 and 3, Suoi Kiet commune. The total estimated damage was about 113 million VND.
Ms. Tran Thi Bich Tram, Chairman of the People's Committee of Suoi Kiet Commune, said: Right after the tornado passed, although it was dark and there was still light rain, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Suoi Kiet Commune sent forces to the area to work with families to fix the damage so that people could temporarily stabilize their living conditions. This morning, the shock force continued to go to the damaged areas to help people clear up fallen trees blocking the way. Currently, Suoi Kiet Commune is continuing to specifically count the damage and report to superiors for directions to help households affected by natural disasters.
Although it is currently a hot and sunny season, there have been some thunderstorms with thunder and lightning and strong winds in the past few days. This signals that the rainy season is approaching. Therefore, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Tanh Linh district recommends that people proactively respond when the rainy season comes, especially to tornadoes, lightning, and heavy rains that cause loss of life, damage to property, and agricultural production. At the same time, it directs localities to monitor meteorological and hydrological information to promptly notify people; fully implement on-duty, and prepare response plans when natural disasters occur.
