Late on August 12, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced that the Vietnam U21 women's volleyball team had an athlete who was not eligible to compete in the U21 Women's Volleyball World Cup currently taking place in Indonesia. Therefore, our team's results were voided for matches in which this athlete participated.

The four matches of the Vietnam U21 team that were affected were the wins against Indonesia, Serbia, Canada and the loss to Argentina. All of these matches had their results changed to 0-3 losses.

As for the match against Puerto Rico, because the above-mentioned player did not participate, the result was still a 3-1 win. From second place in Group A and a ticket to the round of 16, U21 Vietnam fell to the bottom of the table and was only allowed to participate in the ranking round from 17 to 24.

On the morning of August 13, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) responded to FIVB's decision.

A statement from Vietnam said: "The Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) officially informs about the incident related to the decision of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) regarding the case of an athlete who was deemed ineligible to participate in the 2025 Women's U21 Volleyball World Championship in Indonesia.

VFV affirms that it has complied with FIVB regulations on athlete registration procedures as well as submitted complete athlete documents to FIVB before the tournament. These documents have been reviewed and approved by FIVB, allowing athletes to participate in the competition.

However, the FIVB's decision on the ineligible athlete was made based on the request for additional documents and some conditions for the athlete on August 12. These are conditions that have never been previously prescribed for the athletes of the Vietnamese team.

Therefore, VFV is making an official complaint according to FIVB procedures, and is coordinating with competent Vietnamese authorities to clarify and protect the rights of athletes as well as the reputation of Vietnamese volleyball.

VFV hopes that the media and the public will receive objective information and support the Vietnam U21 women's volleyball team."

It is rare for an athlete to compete but be deemed ineligible, and then have the entire national team disqualified, for Vietnamese sports to be excluded from international competitions. Before participating in the tournament, the national federation and the Department of Physical Education and Sports had complied with all regulations of the international federation. The FIVB’s behavior is causing confusion and anger among Vietnamese sports fans and greatly affecting the spirit and physical condition of the athlete mentioned above.

It is known that the sports industry and the Vietnam Volleyball Federation are taking necessary legal preparations to protect athletes and the legitimate interests of the country's sports.
