The 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship officially kicked off on July 15 in Indonesia. The 10 teams in the region are divided into 3 groups, playing a round-robin tournament. The 3 group winners and the best second-placed team will advance to the semi-finals.
While group A has the most teams and is considered the group of death with the presence of host Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Brunei, U23 Vietnam only has to fall into group B with two neighboring opponents, Laos and Cambodia.
If they play to their full potential, the team under the direction of coach Kim Sang-sik will probably not have much difficulty winning the top spot in the group and going straight to the semi-finals.
Due to not playing in the first match on July 16, U23 Vietnam will begin their campaign to conquer the regional playground with a match against U23 Laos on July 19. Three days later, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will face U23 Cambodia.
In Group C, U23 Thailand is rated much higher than U23 Myanmar or U23 Timor Leste. The top spot in the group and the ticket to the next round are therefore difficult to escape from the hands of the young War Elephants. Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam are of course still the top 3 candidates for the championship.
U23 Vietnam currently has the most impressive achievement when winning both recent finals (2022, 2023). Meanwhile, U23 Indonesia and U23 Thailand have only been crowned once in 2019 and 2005. To successfully defend the throne, the Golden Star Warriors promise to go through a difficult journey because the opponents have all summoned very strong squads.
A few days ago, coach Kim Sang-sik also finalized the list of 23 players participating in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament.
Fans can easily recognize familiar faces who regularly play in V.League such as Viktor Le, Dinh Bac, Thanh Nhan, Cao Van Binh, Thai Son, Quoc Viet, Khuat Van Khang... Currently, the whole team is in Jakarta to practice and get used to the weather conditions.
"Winning the championship twice in a row is a proud achievement, but we don't want to put too much pressure on the players. I always emphasize teamwork and discipline in competition and am ready to encourage my students to see the tournament as an opportunity to grow and develop, rather than just aiming for achievements," the Korean coach shared.
