Lao army rescue forces rescued many people trapped on Highway 8 due to landslides, including 45 Vietnamese.

Landslides caused by heavy rains on National Highway 8 in Laos, connecting Bolikhamsai province with Ha Tinh province, Vietnam, occurred on August 3. Several sections of National Highway 8 were blocked, including the section from km 45 to 66. Many vehicles were stuck on this section because it is the only route.

The Lao Ministry of Defense then sent a rescue team to the scene to find a way to get the trapped people out. The rescue team said there were a total of 45 Vietnamese people in 22 vehicles trapped.

By the evening of August 5, all 45 Vietnamese people had been evacuated from the area. Of these, 35 were taken to Khamkeut district, Bolikhamsai province, and 10 were transferred to Kounkham district, Khammouane province, where their health is recovering.

The Lao rescue team said a truck was buried along with the driver, but it was not clear whether he was a Lao citizen or a Vietnamese.

Heavy rains have led to flooding and landslides, causing extensive damage to property, crops and infrastructure in Laos, as well as disrupting transport in some areas near the border with Vietnam. Lao authorities are working to rescue and assist affected people.

The Bolikhamsai Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport announced on August 4 that two sections of National Highway 8, including the section near the Cau Treo border gate in Vietnam, had been closed due to landslides. The agency said it was working to fix the problem to reopen the road soon.
