'Million view' village on Mai Nha island

Curving along the coast, Phuoc Dong fishing village in O Loan commune, Dak Lak (An Hoa Hai commune, Tuy An district, old Phu Yen) possesses a poetic beauty with the deep blue sea in front and Mai Nha islet opposite, an island that the locals revere as a sacred roof that shelters them through many storms.

The fishing village is sheltered by Mai Nha Islet.

Phuoc Dong fishing village has only 210 households, most of whom are engaged in coastal fishing and diving for seafood. No one remembers when the village got its name. In front of the village is a curved sandbank about 1 km long, deeply ingrained in the shore, opposite the village is Mai Nha Islet. For generations, villagers have often said to each other, "When going out to sea, look back at the island, when returning to the village, remember Mai Nha Islet."

According to Mr. Huynh Danh (66 years old), in the past, in front of the village was a densely packed round rock beach blocking the entrance to the shore. "It was very difficult for boats to go in and out, and the basket boats easily capsized. Later, people pooled money, hired a truck to remove the rocks, and stacked them into a small stone raft in the north of the village. Thanks to that, in front of the village there was a curved beach like a bow, so boats could anchor and children could swim in the sea every afternoon," Mr. Danh recalled. The sea in front of the village is now more gentle, small boats anchor their bows facing the village, the sunlight covers the curved sand beach embracing the village like a gentle arm of the ocean.

Like many other fishing villages, Phuoc Dong people worship Ong Nam Hai, the guardian deity of fishermen. In addition, they also have the custom of worshiping Ba. Legend has it that during a trip to sea, people accidentally discovered a female statue drifting to the island. The statue was only about 50 - 60 cm tall, with a strangely beautiful face and a gentle expression, like a good omen from the sea. The people immediately held a ceremony to welcome her back, built a temple named Dinh Ba (Thuy Long Than Nu) right on Mai Nha Islet, with the wish that every trip to sea would have calm waves, favorable winds, and that fishermen would be protected and blessed by her.

Mr. Nguyen Hung Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of O Loan Commune, said that the locality is continuing to invest in infrastructure to serve the development of trade, tourism , and services in the commune in general and Phuoc Dong fishing village in particular. At the same time, it encourages people to participate with the locality in developing community tourism in a sustainable way to protect the ecological environment.

Transform yourself so as not to be forgotten

Not as bustling as other famous beaches, Phuoc Dong is known to young people in its own way through million-view clips on TikTok. Footage of the sunrise on Mai Nha Islet, the quiet fishing village in the falling afternoon light all bring a rare sense of peace.

The sudden popularity on social media has not made Phuoc Dong lose its inherent simplicity. On the contrary, this village is gradually developing sustainable community ecotourism, without destroying the ancient village structure, without hasty commercialization.

For many tourists, coming to Phuoc Dong is to "live slowly", to live deeply. Slow down to listen to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks, to meet an old man mending his net on the porch, to see the life of the fishing village still deeply rooted in every house, every flavor of fish sauce.

Amidst the flow of tourism development and coastal urbanization, Phuoc Dong is like a genuine slice of the Central coastal life, both quiet and full of affection, and is gradually changing so as not to be forgotten.

Mr. Dung also added that, based on available resources and potentials, the locality has set out the direction for tourism development associated with trade and services, which is identified as a priority to become a spearhead economic sector.

In the coming time, the locality will consider developing fishing village tourism in conjunction with developing island tourism: researching and building types and products combining the mainland with islands, cultural heritage with ecological environment, nature, experiential tourism with enjoyment tourism to create richness and diversity for visitors.
