Chess player Pham Nhu Y of Lao Cai ranked 5th at the World Youth Chess Championship.

According to information from the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, chess player Pham Nhu Y of Lao Cai recently participated in the 2024 World Youth Chess Championship U8, U10, U12 Rapid and Blitz and excellently ranked 5th, receiving a Certificate of Merit from the Organizing Committee.

The 2024 World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship U8, U10, U12 took place in Durres, Albania with the participation of 375 young players from 43 countries and territories.

Participating in the tournament, the Vietnamese delegation has 15 athletes competing in 3 age groups: U8, U10, U12 for both male and female.

Pham Nhu Y is the only representative of Lao Cai participating in this tournament.

Nhu Y competed in the U10 age group, rapid chess 15 minutes + 5 seconds. In this event, the Lao Cai player played 11 rounds and ranked 5th in the U10 female rapid chess category, receiving a Certificate of Merit from the Organizing Committee.

Ms. Khong Thi Hoa, chess coach of the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center - who fostered Pham Nhu Y's passion for chess and accompanied her throughout the tournament, said: In 11 rounds, Nhu Y maintained 3rd place in 3 rounds. However, in round 11, Nhu Y lost to her opponent by a not too large margin, ranking in the world's top 5 in the U10 women's rapid chess category.

The 5th place in the world chess tournament is a great success for Pham Nhu Y. Through the tournament, Nhu Y has gained a lot of valuable experience, which is a "ladder" to bring her to the top of the world arena. This is also a great achievement to bring Lao Cai chess to the world level.
